Is it true you have to go to Tesla for tire replacement?
My son blew out two tires and I was going to have the car towed to the nearest service center but the tow place told me that it has to go to Tesla and nobody else can do it. My son reiterated this info. Is this true?
Thank you.
What? I get mine done at Costco
Not true. There is nothing special needed for Tesla tire work.
Wrong.
Any tire shop can do that, you only have to make sure they jack up the car from the correct points to avoid damaging the battery.
Having the correct service pucks would be a plus, but definitely NOT a deal breaker. A lot of shops are good enough to lift the car using their own rubber blocks without damaging it, and may refuse to use the pucks (if you happen to have them) for insurance reasons.
Just check the manual.
no, but some places don’t have the lifting pucks needed to safely raise a tesla. So that’s probably the origin of this story and they wanted to blame someone else instead of themselves
This is true. Tesla is the only place that has the round tires.
The top place folks are idiots, you are welcome to tell them i said so.
Christ, why do some generic rubber donuts have to be dealt with via Tesla?
Of course not. Go anywhere.
The tow company is incorrect. Tesla is the last place I would go for a tire swap. They are overpriced and their service is going to be very slow compared to a local shop like Discount Tire.
I replaced my tires twice at America's Tire (or Discount Tire).
And in case you're wondering, you don't have to get special EV tires. I got Continental Extreme Contact DWS+ and prefer them to the OEM Michelins. The Continentals were quieter even though they didn't have the special foam layer of the Michelin tires. I think there was a drop in range though, but small enough where I don't know if it's the tires or from another cause. And both the OEM Michelins and Contis lasted only ~25K miles.
Did it at my in-laws...
I popped a couple tires on a bad pothole recently. Called Tesla tow service first for a service quote and they would have charged $540/tire to replace on the spot.
Was close enough to home to limp it home and had DiscountTire replace in my garage at home for much cheaper.
Free towing via Tesla roadside service is going to be to the service center only, but tires is the last thing I'd get from the service center.
It's not a spaceship. It's a car. Just make sure the tireshop knows how to lift the car up properly.
You can buy a warranty at Discount/American tires. It is also a little cheaper.
That is not true.
I’ve only been to Discount Tire for Tesla. Excellent service here
Last time I got new tires, I went to Discount Tire lol.
A Tesla is still a car. Tires are tires. I try and avoid the SC's at all costs TBH. Just make sure the tire shop knows how to lift an EV since the batteries are on the bottom. Get your own jack pucks if you don't feel like the tire shop knows how. That's the only difference.
No.
Doesn’t have to go to Tesla, but if the service center is legit they’ll have the special attachments needed to raise the Tesla. They look like hockey pucks. You can do it without them, but it’s kinda dangerous and could damage the undercarriage.
I got mine off Amazon for under $20. I leave them in the frunk.
Same except trunk lol.
Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. They can't make "using their stuff/services" a condition of keeping your warranty.
I messed up a tire and went to Discount Tire. If it's not warranty work you can go anywhere.
Do a search in this sub of tires.
I had Tesla mobile service change my winter tires to summer. He said he never uses the pucks. He said just be sure to jack at the correct point.
You can get tires anywhere you want. And any kind you want. You don't need them from tesla and you don't need 'ev" tires.
Blatant lie
