I'm expecting to start looking for a used Model S next week. Is there any way of checking the battery health when doing an initial viewing, even just a basic starting point, other than just looking at range and charge as a rough idea? I have a Bluetooth code reader if that helps.

Or is it have a look and get Cleverly or someone else to come out to run a test?

Tessie app can give you degradation but I guess you’d need to have the car in your Tesla app so bit late by that point. In my experience the range and charge calc is roughly right.

E.g on my 2019 S 80% battery charge shows a range of 277 miles. That would guesstimate 100% would give 346

I think rated range when new was 370 miles so very roughly 24 miles lost of 6.5%

Tessie tells me I’ve had 7% usable battery degradation.

Now whether Tessie just does this same calculation or something more technical I don’t know, but it’s close. In real world usage it seems accurate too, in terms of longer journeys I’ve done.

That's quite helpful, thanks. Im looking at possibly private sale or trade. Private I will ask to show me the app and trade I have the right to return if not as described.

Sorry to hijack, but are you using the EPA range for this calculation as opposed to the WLTP?

I'm in the process of buying a used Tesla (Model 3, 2022 LR, 39k miles) which is showing 167 miles at 50% charge, or 334 at 100% if extrapolated.

Compared to the WLTP range of 389, this is obviously atrocious. but compared to the EPA range of 358 it's great. Looking at other posts, it seems that most new 2022 LRs also showed slightly less - like ~345 - against which 334 feel exceptional.

      Thoughts?

I bought a used model 3 this week. If you get the seller to ensure there enough battery, put in a postcode that’s far away, and see what the estimated battery is on maps will be on arrival. I’ve found this % to be very accurate. You can then roughly work out the battery degradation
