Can You Manually Set Battery to Precondition?
Is there a way to manually precondition the battery? I entered the supercharging address directly in the Navigation as I knew it was the closest site to the airport and 30 minutes before arrival, attempted to precondition it, but couldn't find an option anywhere. The battery was at 42%, but charged very slowly and said it was because it was cold even after a 2.5 hour drive in 55 degree weather.
If the navigation knows you are going to a supercharger, it automatically starts to precondition the battery as you get closer to the supercharger. No magical button in the car to manually precondition.
There is a magical button to manually precondition, you just need to buy it and put it in the car: https://enhauto.com/product/four-s3xy-buttons
The only way I know to precondition the batteries without using API or s3xy buttons is defrost car…
Find the charger under the chargers section in maps. Should auto precondition.
If you are going for other chargers than the Tesla supercharger. Route one of these Tesla superchargers which will automatically pre condition but drive to the other chargers and it will charge fast. Just have to trick the system
You can turn on climate control manually; this also preconditions the battery. Or set a departure time (for example 30 minutes from now) to have the cabin at your preferred temperature and the battery preconditioned.
I have been looking for this feature for a while. I live on Maui, in Hawaii, where there are no Superchargers, so it is LITERALLY impossible to navigate to a supercharger because the closest one is in Honolulu across 50 miles of ocean. Do those shortcut buttons below really work? Does turning on the climate really do the trick? Obviously, it's really hot here but for some reason, I still get the notification that it needs preconditioning.
Are you wanting to precondition for a 3rd party supercharger? I could see that as a reason for manually preconditioning.
I'm also curious as to the distance it would be to circumnavigate the island, distance of the road to Hana, distance to drive up to Haleakala and how much regen you get driving down both. It's a shame about Lahaina - I never got to visit 34 years ago because my 250 pound bro-in-law stationed at Hickam and alcoholic bro got me drunk at a Korean bar the night before so I spent the flight over and next day hung over in bed in the hotel while they checked out the town and went snorkling. I guess with Tesla you don't have to pay the "import" fees to transport a car back from the mainland when you buy so you pay the same as mainlanders?
Don't navigate to the address. Navigate by name ie voice command "navigate to townname supercharger" or click chargers icon and select it and navigate to it from there. It should precondition if necessary.
I too would like to manually pre-condition my battery without using navigation (I know where I’m going and audible directions are annoying when trying to enjoy music). I see the link to 3rd party, but $300? Really? You can schedule to precondition using the Tesla app, but on the fly would be nice. I don’t understand the comment about turning on climate control….its always on when I’m driving, but never has it preconditioned my battery.
I can see this being my typical use case as well. If I'm staying up in the mountains in winter and I know I have another 100 mile round trip the next day to a different resort, on my return trip, I want to stop by the supercharger 20 miles from my lodging where I (usually) only have access to only a 20 amp outlet in the parking lot. I suppose the only way currently would be to use the nav, locate, and click on the supercharger.
During a long road trip, your favorite Supercharger (SC) along the route can be quite far away. It is much easier to dial in its address directly. It would be great to have an option, perhaps a simple checkbox on the screen—to indicate that the entered address is a Supercharger. This way, the car should be able to automatically precondition the battery for optimal charging upon arrival.
This Thanksgiving, I rented a 3 to the same location and this time on the return to the airport, from the nav, selected the nearby supercharger (I think it was the other one near the one I went to last year as there were 2 choices - one Tesla only), but it started preheating even though it was about 2.5 hours away. Does the battery really need that much time to preheat in 50F weather?
Your Tesla will precondition automatically if a Supercharger is a destination. If weather is bad it may not precondition sufficiently even if you’ve spent the last hour navigating to it. Don’t sweat.
So what if the only charger available is a non-Tesla charger?
See if it’s listed in navigation as a charger. Otherwise allocate a little extra time to precondition on arrival.
There is no built in supercharger preconditioning button, there is an aftermarket solution.
Don't enter the address, select from the list, or voice command.
