When driving sometimes I want to disengage the autopilot (including the speed) without pressing the break but rather just moving the steering wheel. There have been times where I need to maneuver but I need to hit the break and the steering wheel to completely disengage it. Is there a setting to get rid of both with just the wheel?

Edit:

Damn there are a lot of people in this community with a stick up their ass. Thank you to everyone who helped me you were all wonderful. I came from the GTI community and this is all new so sorry for asking a question to those who feel the need to be better than everyone else.

I can't tell you how many times I've tried to take over in AP while the screen is flashing red bc that's my first instinct instead of hitting the gear selector. It's a bad system imo.

Also welcome to the community. There's some of us that were car enthusiast turned Tesla owner/ car enthusiast but at lot of this community is BRUTAL. Any questions or comments with a negative tone towards Tesla get torn to shreads, even if they're completely valid. It's honestly been a big turn off my me wanting to be more active in local Tesla groups.

Either way, glad to see another car guy here and don't worry about them too much; this subreddit turns into a big echo chamber most of the time.

Thank you for the warm welcome!! Over at r/GTI no question is too silly. I’ve been working with cars most of my life and I love them! This is not necessarily a car it’s more of a piece of technology that you drive in.

I wish everyone was much more welcoming since we all love our car and want to talk about it. It should be a place to help each other and learn. If there are any Tesla subreddits like that I would love to join them! Especially since I feel like there’s so much to learn even if you’re an expert.

That's right!! There's so much to learn about them, especially with EVs, I feel like dumb questions get good answers most of the time. I've had an E92 bmw before and Subarus since then but wanted to get back to something fast that wouldn't leak oil 😅😅😅. I love ICE cars and don't hate at all, but knowing I can thrash my EV without worrying about valve seals or turbos is awesome

In fairness it’s way better than what ford and most of the completion is doing, it’s hard to even tell if the ford system is on or off, atleast Tesla uses a big blue symbol

      1. SellTop5916

my 30k Subaru Crosstrek did wayyyy better at lane centering and minimal self driving with a camera based system. Way better than my Tesla. I feel like too many Tesla owner are over-hypef by the media's comments on AP and FSD to thinking it's the best in the industry. It's not.

        1. Volts-2545

In my experience tesla does it better than most, but Kia and subru and VW have been catching up

    3. dr7s

It’s much better over at r/Teslalounge in regards to criticism . We all take criticism over there very well. In fact 50% of the posts are probably issues that arise with Tesla.

  2. dafazman

I tap the gear stalk UP once and it cancels everything (But it won't cancel rent or student debt 🤡)

    1. sik_dik

Yeah and if you preposition your foot into the accelerator, you can eliminiate or reduce the immediate regen braking when disengaging AP

      1. dafazman

cough cough Phantom braking cough cough

    2. Orienos

      This is the way!

    3. Developer_X

      Does it work on twitter?

    4. blueranger36

Thank you! I wasn’t sure if that would work

      1. scott_weidig

Lots of other cool things too in the manual… 😁

        1. blueranger36

Yes nothing in the manual so I figured I would ask the community if they know a work around. No need to be snarky..

          1. scott_weidig

Honestly, not trying to be snarky there really is a ton of good stuff in the manual. Below is from the manual actually:

Canceling and Resuming To manually cancel Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, press the brake pedal or briefly move the drive stalk up once. The cruising speed icon on the touchscreen turns gray to indicate that Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is no longer active.

Really trying to help more than snark.

If only there is a location where all the information about the use of the car is located.

        RTFM

Works on older cars. Well I don't know about really old S's

        This is a Model 3 sub 🤡

  3. FatefulPizzaSlice

AP will disengage but cruise control will not, so you're still gonna be travelling at the speed you were. If the case arises I need to fully disengage cruise and AP, I just tap the right stalk up and keep my foot on the accelerator or brake as needed.

  4. 404davee

Up stalk is the way. Turning the wheel takes too much force and can therefore reduce control.

    1. [deleted]

      Breaks are easier

      1. Takhar7

        But also dangerous.

        1. [deleted]

          How so?

          1. Takhar7

            Cars behind

            Destabilizing the car

            Etc.

          2. [deleted]

You don’t really lose any speed if you don’t tap it hard

          3. infinteunity

But when you lift foot off accelerator it starts breaking

          4. [deleted]

Well that’s why you tap the break and put your foot on the accelerator real quick

          5. Magnetic_Reaper

Do it like a pro, use both feet.

          6. xtianfiero

It never goes smoothly when you tap the brake and switch to the accelerator.. I prefer to put enough pressure on the accelerator to match the current speed then push up on the stalk to make the transition seamless.

  5. _adreon

I don’t think so. You could also use the right stalk (push up) to disengage autopilot and traffic aware cruise control at the same time

  6. onlyletters999

Brake & yes. ... Omg the amount if people that wrote break...I hope you were trolling

  7. [deleted]

OP you just found that 50% of people here are good Tesla owners and 50% are morons

    1. blueranger36

Haha yeah I guess I had to learn the hard way. Makes the good ones look bad!

  8. Locoboof

Don’t know about a setting to get rid of both. But, if you move the wheel aggressively enough (to the right or left) it will disengage.

Pressing up on the auto pilot stalk to disengage as well as tapping the break. Those are the only 3 ways I’m aware of.

  9. McBuddie

You can disengage autopilot (including cruise control) by clicking the Park button.

I never even knew you can disengage it by tapping the gear stalk up until now after reading the comments.

  10. trifster

AP disengagement was improved for lane changes. Use turn signal then change lane. AP Autosteer will disengage (blue steering wheel to grey) but keep speed with TACC. Double tap stalk down to re enable Autosteer.

    1. DowntownDiamond3448

This is what I do, but I've found that it only consistently disables AP if you do a FULL turn signal, not the quick one, which is slightly annoying. I do wish the car would give control back to you more gracefully when applying wheel force to cancel. It's pretty aggressive when it cancels. I feel like I lose control of the vehicle for a split second while it darts to the direction you have the wheel pointed.

  11. tiredsultan

I don't think so. Workaround could be to turn the wheel to disengage the steering and roll the thumb wheel to reduce the self driving speed while holding the gas pedal so you maintain the speed you want. Alternatively you could just touch the break slightly to disengage the cruise control but invariably this will start to reduce your speed due to regenerative breaking.

  12. lvl2ev

Sure can, moving the wheel only turns off Auto Steer, brakes will turn off both Auto Steer and TACC (Traffic-Aware Cruise Control). Otherwise, as others have mentioned push up on the right stock to accomplish the same as pushing the brake.

  13. [deleted]

Yes, it turns off auto steer but not cruise control which will still stop for you if there’s a car slowing down in front of you

  14. Takhar7

Up on the gear stalk is the easiest and safest way to disengage.

  15. notorioushim

Hitting the brake, hitting up on the gear shift stalk, and turning the steering wheel enough will all disengage AP.

  16. vik8629

    Just tap brake

  17. slightlyfresh

Using turn signal before changing the lane greatly reduces amount of force required to disengage the AP, so it’s most likely the intended way. However, this will also keep the current speed with TACC, if you want to completely disengage both AP and TACC push the right stalk up by one step (not fully)

  18. [deleted]

Yes, autosteer will disengage if you put enough force on the wheel. It takes quite a bit more than what is required to maintain autosteer when you get the on-screen warning...you definitely have to be trying to turn the wheel.

I have no idea why people would be abusive with regard to a new owner's questions. A new EV owner will have a LOT of questions. Some of the answers might seem obvious to someone who has had one for awhile, but EV's really are a different world. I watched a TON of videos on all aspects of the car during my 3 month wait between ordering and delivery, and even I had some questions after delivery. Every once in awhile, even I still discover new things about my car even though I've had it for almost a year now.
