Hey all!

I recently got a flat tire on my 2024 Model Y at Costco. The car has 25,000 miles and is still running on the original set of tires. I was getting notifications that the tread was light and it was tire for rotation / new tires. I’ve been quoted $350 per tire from Costco, which seems reasonable, but I’m trying to weigh my options.

I guess that means I should replace both of them. 🤢

Questions:
1. Should I buy the replacement tire from Costco, or should I consider getting it from Tesla directly?
2. What are the pros and cons of going through Costco versus Tesla Service for tire replacement?
I’d appreciate any insights on tire performance, service experiences, and whether Costco has been reliable with Tesla tire replacements. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Discount Tire / America’s Tire is the way to go if you have one nearby. Tesla will overcharge you and Costco will make you wait around forever before they get around to installing it.

This, this, this. Screw Costco tires! Waited over 4 hours to replace ONE tire for our other car that had a screw in it. I had an appointment too! I used to install/repair tires and I see they just take on too much work, they're too busy, and they're not that well crafted I would say. Discount tires all the way. Order and schedule appointment online and hassle free.

Costco tires wouldn't even rotate our tires while I was there and we have the warranty. The warranty isn't that great IMO either.

You created a false dichotomy here. You can go to any decent tire place. You can even to to Tirerack and have tires sent to a shop, where they will be installed for you. Unlike most things about a Tesla, when it comes to tires it's like any other car (with the caveat that you want tires that are rated for the weight of a Tesla).

    Discount Tire

  4. SUPER-NIINTENDO

Do you want to pay more for no reason? Then go with Tesla. They’re tires bro

    1. 17kangm

lol are you serious. OP, go to any other tyre shop than Tesla.

      1. SUPER-NIINTENDO

That what I was trying to say. If you want to pay more for no reason, go With Tesla

      2. Snoo93079

        Woosh

Got it. So Tesla’ll be more expensive. Understood. I didn’t know if there was something included that made it more affordable.

        1. 17kangm

If you get tires from Tesla, AFAIK they don’t come with warranty either. Go to Costco or somewhere like Discount tire and get the warranty for the same price as buying tires from Tesla.

You’re saying Tesla’s going to tow me to a service place and replace them cheaper than Costco?

      1. Physical_Reason3890

Was shopping for tires. I went on tesla and got a quote from them was 1800$. But I got the name of the recommended tire from Tesla. So I typed the name into costco. They would do the job for 1200$. So I'd recommend seeing what tire tesla is recommending then shopping around. This way you are comparing apples to apples

Spoke to my mechanic and he ended up doing the job for 1000$.

      2. blestone

Get aaa cheaper to tow with them.

  5. elatllat

Costco tire warranty is valid for 60 months from the date of purchase, or until the tire reaches 1.6 mm

  6. fuckittapit

Go woth Costco - purchase is cheaper than tirerack.com (they will price match), and in addition to the warranty, you will get free tire rotations and nitrogen to inflate the tires.

    1. Misophonic4000

      I think you mean nitrogen...

      1. fuckittapit

        Oops. Yes I did.

    2. kimchibaeritto

78% of air is nitrogen just FYI. So you get 22% more nitrogen then if you went elsewhere heh

      1. fuckittapit

The intent of using 100% nitrogen is that it allows you to maintain a steady air pressure in cold and hot weather, whereas in tires filed with air, the tire air pressure is subject to more volatility depending on temperature changes.

This in turn means that a tire filled with only nitrogen will maintain the recommended tire pressure required for the vehicle, and therefore ensuring even tread wear and prolonging the life of the tire.

Not a fan of Costco tires. Takes forever to get the “free” rotation, even with an appointment. At least 1.5-2 hours. Next time I’ll go to my local shop or discount tire/americas tire.

  8. [deleted]

America's Tire would be my choice for tires, plus their tire certificate for free replacement

  9. Either-Pineapple-183

there are some hidden costs that are covered at costco such as tire rotation, free tire flat fix, balance, hazard warranty etc. You need to factor that in when price shopping with other places that don’t provide that.

I use Costco for rotation on my Teslas and usually it’s done in an hour. I pay out of pocket for rotation since I am in factory tires but once it’s time for a replacement, I will go to Costco.

  10. aquatone61

You probably need more than just 2 tires, have them all measured.

  11. ordinaryflask

It’s a car. Take to any reputable tire shop lol

  12. [deleted]

I used Discount Tire, got a better deal than Costco and they did an excellent job.

  13. nancytp82

I got my tires from Discount tires 👍🏽. I was told that the Orlando Service Center directs people to Discount tires so I saved money.

  14. GlitteryStranger

I just went to Discount Tire and spent $1400, that was the 2nd cheapest option too.

  15. SleepymonkeyDND

Can you change the tire dimensions from the OEM at costco?

  16. IAnetworking

I was looking at costco, but I was apprehensive about buying a different tire than the Telas recommended tires. So i shoped and found the same tires model as the OEM from Discount Tire. Paid $320 out of the door per tire, and they had it in stock. Brought my own pucks just in case and ended up using mine because they could not find theirs. Also, the tires have the damping foam in them. Tire model CONTINENTAL PROCONTACT RX 255 /45 R19 104W XL BSW TE

    Hope that will help.

  17. Par4DaCourse

Costco. Then go get your tires aligned at Goodyear or a suspension shop. Only advantage of Tesla SC over Costco is you can get your tires changed and aligned at the same time if you don't mind paying a lot more for the same tires.

  18. Recent_Specialist839

Do you really need a tire? I had a nail in mine but Costco wanted to sell me a new tire just because they didn't know how to plug those stupid "acoustic" tires that come on EVs. I had a local tire shop that knew how to plug and they didn't it for free.

  19. thenullbyte

Swapped both my Y and my 3's tires at costco, super painless except the fact that the magnetic number thing you're supposed to put on your car to identify it to the staff doesn't work well with a glass roof lol.

Just snapped a set of these up at a rediculous price on Tire Rack and shipped them to my local Discount Tire: $715 for a set of 4 Bridgestone Potenzas https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Potenza%20Sport&partnum=54YR0PSXLV2

  21. Really_Papi

Discount Tire is the place to go.

I recently bought 4 Goodyear Electricdrive tires for my Model Y, with 32,000 miles in it.

    Price was $315 each.

So far, I'm very happy with the tires.

  22. DSPbuckle

    Go with best price

  23. bitNine

A tire is a tire and Teslas have tires just like tires on other cars with tires.

  24. Numerous_Bad1961

Costco did a great job with my X.

  25. JayGatsby52

    100% Discount Tire.

    $350 PER TIRE?!

I just outfitted my etron with four 255/50/20s for $700, installed.

  26. Twofu_

Wouldn't OP still need to go to a service center for calibration etc?

    1. totalfarkuser

What needs to be calibrated on a tire replacement??

  27. vote4logan

    Ahh understood. Thank you.

I’m just already parked outside of Costco so going to them is easiest. I would get it towed via Tesla if it would save me money, but at this point, sounds like it doesn’t actually matter.
