What strategy to replace punctured tire on my Tesla model Y
One tire got punctured on my 2023 Tesla Model Y long range AWD Dual motor. The tires have16300miles on them. Had the car towed to Costco. Costco only have Michelin tires and cannot match the original Continental tires. Initially, I asked them to replace a pair of tires (Michelin tires). But later they called me saying they have to replace all 4 tires and cannot mix the tires. If I only want to replace two tires, I will have to sign a waiver. Four tires at $1300. (originally, two tires cost $660)
Then I called Tesla road side assistance and they replaced the punctured tire which costed me $460. The question is: Do I need to change the other tire to make the pair of tires on the rear are both new tires? Do I also need to do alignment and balancing?
Tire shaving is not an option: I have already driven the new tire for several miles; the tire shaving shop said they can only shave brand new tires. Also shaving a tire costs $180 which is just $210 different from installing another new tire in a local tire shop (total cost $390).
Never thought of getting a punctured tire can lead to so much trouble. Can any people share any experience on if I can only replace one tire (460$)? Or I have to replace a pair of tires (total: $950)? Or I replace all 4 tires at Costco (total $1300)?
Standard procedure at Costco is to recommend replacement of all tires for an AWD vehicle.
If Tesla roadside assistance replaced the tire for you. I would continue to drive it and replace all 4 when the time comes.
From the Owner's Manual:
If tires need to be replaced early, for example due to a flat tire, we recommend replacing the tires in pairs unless the other tires are within 2/32 in (1.5 mm) of tread depth of the new tire.
Next time, I would sign the Costco waiver for two tires.
Most tire places don’t understand that AWD EVs have no mechanical connection between the front and rear tires. Currently no EV needs to replace more than two tires when one is damaged. You just want them matched left and right.
All sounds normal. Would have signed the waiver and had Costco replace 2 instead of 1 having less wear.
I punctured my rear drivers side tire a few weeks ago, but I was lucky. The puncture was clean and I patched it successfully. So far it has survived two long road trips so … knock on wood I guess.
My understanding is the benefit of the Continental tires over ICE tires is the extra foam to reduce road noise.
If my patch leaks I’ll likely get two Continentals to keep the wear even, but I’m not sure how absolutely necessary that is
Just had to replace a tire.. jacked it up and just brought the tire in, got it replaced and put it back on myself
